Introduction

The China-Spain astronomical bilateral cooperation focus on the 10.4-meter Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC) and involves the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC, CAS), Nanjing Institute of Astronomical Optics & Technology (NIAOT) of CAS, Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), and the GTC Observatory of Spain. This cooperation was started in 2015, when Ms. Carmen Vela Olmo, State Secretary for the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain, visited NAOC. In 2016, a signature of the agreement of China-Spain bilateral cooperation was witnessed by Professor Bai Chunli, Academician and then the President of CAS, and Ms. Carmen Vela Olmo in Spain. In the past six years, the astronomers from both China and Spain have established collaboration teams to actively promote cooperation in scientific research, instrument development, and talent exchanges. A fair and win-win China-Spain astronomy cooperation will surely help both countries to achieve more fruitful results on astronomy and related scientific and technological communities.

Under the framework of the agreement, the Chinese astronomical community will become a partner of the world's largest single-aperture optical telescope through providing a High-Resolution ultra-stable Spectrograph (HRS) as in-kind contribution to the GTC. HRS will be a powerful terminal instrument on GTC, significantly enhancing its capabilities of high-resolution spectroscopy. This collaboration will alleviate China's long-term predicament lacking of large optical telescopes, and comprehensively improve the areas on cutting-edge research, such as exoplanets, stars, interstellar medium, black holes, galaxies, and the chemical evolution of our Milky Way.

In June 2019, the conceptual design of HRS passed the international review in Spain. At present, the Chinese technical team has completed the preliminary design of HRS. Relevant work has been approved and will be supported by CAS.

With the support of the CAS International Cooperation Project, the China-Spain bilateral astronomical cooperation has already achieved high-impact research results in black holes and chemically peculiar stars. The development of HRS will help Chinese scientists to obtain guaranteed observational time on GTC.
