报告摘要/Abstract:

By reviewing some recent progress in topological magneto-hydrodynamics, we focus on the relations between magnetic helicity and energy of knotted and braided fields, using winding number information. We outline the role of geometric features associated with the inflexional configuration of magnetic fields that trigger the instability of braided structures leading to the abrupt burst and release of magnetic energy. This particular phenomenon has important effects in the dynamics of solar coronal loops, and in the design of the magnetic fields confinement of plasmas in fusion physics.

报告人介绍/Bio:

Prof. Renzo L. RICCA received his master and doctoral degree in Applied Mathematics from Cambridge University (Trinity College). After lecturing at the University College London, he moved to Italy and he is now a Professor of Mathematical Physics at the University of Milano-Bicocca. His main research field is topological fluid dynamics, and he is known for his work on magnetic helicity and applications in physical knot theory (topological entanglement in vortex dynamics, magnetic relaxation in ideal magnetohydrodynamics, knotted fields in quantum hydrodynamics, defect production in condensates, energy-complexity relations of fluid flows, etc.). He has more than 80 scientific publications in the field of mathematical physics, including a single-author Nature paper and 4 monographs, with a scientific impact of 2134 citations, H-index=24, i10-index 39.
